Check out **geometric series**, there's a formula for the **partial sum** of its terms:
x^a + x^(a+1) + x^(a+2) + ... + x^b
= (x^a - x^(b+1)) / (1 - x)
= (x^(b+1) - x^(a)) / (x - 1)
(It's not a short explanation, it would require a bunch of algebra)
