Neither is true, the triangle inequality |a+b| ≤ |a| + |b| is what holds in general. Geometrically, if you think of horizontal displacements of a and b units, this just says that the distance traveled after moving a units followed by b units (with negative displacement cancelling off with positive displacement) cannot exceed the distance traveled by summing both distances.
