I've only ever used that to enter German letters.  ß is alt 225.  Some of the vowels were 139, 145 maybe, I dunno it's been so long I can't remember.

Was forced to learn to use it during an internship in college at a consulting firm where I was tasked with taking hundreds of pension paper files and making them electronic.  Honestly might have been the most valuable thing I learned that summer.
