That depends on what you call the economic sector. Consulting, probably not very prevalent. Economic analysis in a large company, my experience says no. Also working on analysis at a bank is a big no in my experience as well.

I have a masters in economics, have worked in banks and financial institutions my whole career and have never seen a single non relational database

For our bookkeeping/tax software we actually use an object-oriented DB but it is the only one i've seen so far in the wild.
